Dear Friends of the YMCA,

                                                                                                                                                                        When you provide financial support to your YMCA, you strengthen our community and move us all forward.  Every day our community faces new challenges that create a greater need for the work we do.  As we continue to respond to those needs, we need YOUR help to in order to provide substantial support to our community.  As a leading nonprofit for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, your Y uses your gift to make a meaningful, enduring impact in our community through:
 
  • Nutritious meals to ensure families with food insecurity receive access to food.  1 in 7 children in Iowa struggles with hunger.  20.1% of children under the age of 18 in Des Moines County are food insecure. The Burlington Area YMCA distributed 21,332 free weekend grab and go meals to youth in our community in 2020.  Every Friday we distribute approximately 300 meal boxes that contain breakfast and lunch including milk for both Saturday and Sunday.  Meal boxes are picked up at the YMCA.  Staff and volunteers also help deliver the meal boxes to families with transportation barriers.   
 
  • Membership and program assistance allowing families in financial need to come to the Y to participate in childcare, swim lessons, youth sports, Friday youth night, before and after school child care, and summer day camp. In Des Moines County 43% of Residents Median Household Income is under $35,000 and 25% of children live in poverty.  Last year we provided membership and program assistance to 681 deserving youth and adults in need totaling $59,034 and 267 FREE swim lessons were provided to area 2nd graders in 2020!    
 
  • Access for domestic violence victims to seek safe shelter and transitional housing from Domestic Violence.  In 2020, the shelter program provided 988 shelter nights including 1,640 meals.  The average length of stay was 76 days; 37% of the shelter clients transitioned into their own housing after leaving the shelter. 100% of the shelter clients were from Des Moines County.  
 
At the Y, no child, family or adult is turned away.  We recognize that for our community to succeed, everyone must have the opportunity to be healthy, confident, connected and secure.  Our mission is to lift up the most vulnerable among us, to nurture the healthy minds and bodies of everyone in our community, and to connect people to each other.  We need your support now more than ever as we are responding to those challenges through our food distribution program, offering financial assistance for membership and programs, and safe housing at our domestic violence shelter.  Every dollar donated stays local and has a lasting impact on the people in our community.  All donors will be recognized through various publications.
